6.15.10

I have a thing for old signs, particularly ones from the 50s and 60s. I just found out that this style is called "Googie". The first time I read that, I misread it because what I saw was "Google". (Maybe I need new contacts???)

As usual, when I really like something, I tend to obsess just a little bit. This post contains 6 examples. For a little while, in my fevered obsession, I thought, "I could do an entire Moleskine of just these signs." Fortunately, that manic thought passed and while I suspect I will still draw some of them, rest assured that when you stop by to visit again, it won't be to view an never-ending parade of Googie bowling signs.

I love your signs! Why not obsess a little? They are a great subject.

I'm a touch behind on your blog. I like the spirit of your Spirit of the Gulf drawing. And you do have great bell peppers (I am referring, of course, to the drawing), and you lettuces may be lazy but you have great alliteration! Re the lettuces, if you study impressionist paintings, for example, sometimes it is very effective to have some edges that are not defined, especially edges that face the light. I suspect close attention to values will make the lettuce more to your liking the next time you try.

Very COOL signs!I just love your drawing style. Googie is a new one on me as well.
Nice to know we're almost neighbors! It's a small world after all.

Hahahaha, this totally reminds me of a pizza restaurant just opened in Breaux Bridge that's got Oil and Engine Oil signs all over the shop, and I think wherever there's an absolutely obsession over a single subject, it creates a strong theme that's totally unique and attractive

Learned something new! I think these are fabulous! Funnily enough, we were driving somewhere over the weekend and there is a sign along I-80 for a place to stop for food/coffee and it is an old style coffee pot. I was just telling Michael how cool that sign was and how much I loved the old school feel of it. These signs are no different. 20 years ago I would have thought they were just old-fashioned and ugly. Now I find that I absolutely am fascinated by them myself! Well done, my Roadchick blogger friend! (My favorite of these is the one in Blue Springs!)

Dzan~ Thanks for noticing. ;)

PAMO~ Thanks! It is a small world.

Alex~ Your comment reminded me of a pizza place that we had up north called Gomer's Garage with all kinds of old advertising stuff and car stuff.

Autumn~ I don't suppose you happened to get a picture of that sign, did you???

LOL...cracked up when I read your comment to Autumn! In the words of a true addict!

These are great sketches. And I would agree, they do seem more interesting than today's signs!

Raena~ well, now that you've pointed it out. . . yes, you're right. My name is Roadchick and I am addicted to old signs. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go talk to Autumn who said something about getting a photo of that sign. ;)

Autumn~ Really? Really and truly? Oooh goodie, I can't wait! :)
